SURPRISE! In honor of all things art and pride month (happy pride, people!🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️) I’m dropping into your inbox with a rare and awesome midweek pick-me-up video: a live convo with the amazing !!!
Last week, artist, comedian, filmmaker and TV host W. Kamau Bell came to the studio to talk art, community and pride for his Office Hours series LIVE on his incredible Substack, Who’s With Me? We hung out and chatted and laughed for a good hour or so - did a bunch of drawing, chatted about art and creativity, took Q’s from viewers, all that good stuff.
The video is above, so grab a snack and a sketch pad, hit play, and hang out with us.
Kamau is the creator and host of the CNN show United Shades of America, director and producer of the documentary We Need to Talk about Cosby and has one of the best substacks around. He does not shy away from anything, thank goodness. Recently he performed at the Kennedy Center and wrote the most poignent piece about his decision to perform instead of boycott, and how he used the opportunity to speak up for LGBTQ+ and other folks marginalized by the current US admininstration, and the world. Thank you WKB!! ❤️
Kamau and I first met when I approached him years ago to be featured in my column in the New York Times. I was writing/drawing a story about the meaningful objects people keep nearby when the work. Here is the piece - Kamau’s is THE HULK! - along with object-stories from Betty Reid Soskin, Michael Pollan and Brene Brown:
Over 6 years later, it was so fun to catch up with him over pens and paper - and finally ask him to teach me how to draw the hulk (and tell me why the hulk matters so much to him.) It was a total blast talking with him and welcoming him into the NEW STUDIO. I hope it’s the first time of many.
Okay, I leave the rest for you to enjoy, but go follow Kamau’s substack and go see him LIVE on the road, and watch all his shows!
HAPPY PRIDE, y’all! See you Sunday!
xoxo,
