Hi glorious GUTsters,

What an amazing month it’s been! Over the last four weeks, we created a visual book of days—one small drawing every day in response to a weekly theme. If you’ve been with us on this journey, you’ve drawn patterns, creatures, food, and dreams. Many of you shared those drawings in the community chat, and each one I saw was thoughtful, joyful, and inspiring. I also love how you all support one another. It’s like a not-snobby art class! Whatever you drew this month, I hope you look back and feel proud.

You have heard me say it before: Building a drawing habit, and drawing like we do here in DrawTogether, changes us from the inside out. The mental health impact of ten minutes of drawing? Someone should partner with doctors to prescribe it. (Oh, wait. DrawTogether is doing just that. More on that soon!)

QUESTION FOR YOU: How did this month of daily drawings impact your drawing practice—and your life off the page? Please leave a comment and let me and the DT/GUT crew know how the experience was for you. It’s kind of like I’m doing a little research about the impact of daily drawing on our wellbeing.

Actually, it is exactly that. :)

For those who are GUT-curious, here are a few drawings from the chat. I am so inspired. I hope you are, too.

Top: Stephanie Huang, Kelleyazul, Mariko Merritt; Middle: Notes from B, Chloe, Corrie Wright; Bottom: Libby Chenault, Courtney, LauraDunnART

Got a pencil? You're ready for this!

And here are all my daily drawings, made over four weeks in four locations. Patterns to creatures to food to dreams. And NO, I will never again eat so many magnesium gummies at once, and YES I did have a dream that the rolling stones made a giant naked butt album cover, and YES I do think corn popsicles should be a thing.

Our four weeks maybe be over but the daily drawing doesn’t have to end. If you want keep going, we’ve got something you can keep doing daily. It’s also a segue into what’s coming up next in the GUT—it’s going to be so fun, and bring us back to where it all started for DrawTogether!

DRAWING GAMES: The Doodle Game

I learned the doodle game in art school. My artist-in-training friends and I used to play it at an all-night Korean diner at 3 a.m., drinking what I later learned was called Yuanyang. It’s a potent mixture of coffee, black tea, and condensed milk from Hong Kong. Hence playing games at 3 a.m.

The doodle game is similar to a Surrealist game called Decalcomania. In Decalcomania, an artists uses CHANCE to create a print image and then turns the result into an unexpected image. But we at the GUT do it with drawing.

Anyone can play this game. You can do this with another person, or on your own. All you need is paper and a pen, an open mind and wide open eyes, and your imagination. A sense of humor also helps.

Playing this drawing game once a day is a great way to strengthen our imagination and pump our creativity muscles, while keeping up our daily drawing practice.

My next month of drawings, all ready to go. (Instructions for GUT members are below!)

Because I want to keep up with my daily drawings this month, I created a monthly drawing spread in my sketchbook like last month, and plan on doing one a day in the am, just to keep my imagination spinning and my hands moving.

You’re welcome to join me….

Either way—one today or every day, grab a pen and let’s do this:
