A Week of Creatures
From creepy-crawlies to cutie-patooties, we're going to get wild.
Hello friends! I am so happy you’re here.
It’s week two of our Book of Days, drawing style. Reminder/ICYMI: Every Sunday for a month I’m giving you a mini-lesson and prompt for the week ahead. Every day you make a new mini-drawing in response, and share yours in the chat (accountability! community!). Easy peasy. Someone in the chat said this feels like a reunion of the 30 Days of Drawing, but summer-style. No sprints this season. Definitely no marathons. This is a daily creative stroll.
Our stroll is off to a great start. The hundreds of pattern drawings you shared in the chat last week are gorgeous, and the variety is stunning. Just as important: How do you feel after each drawing? Are those feelings changing at all? I find the more I draw, the more I get excited to keep drawing. The “universal law of creative inertia”1 is basically gravity for artists. The force is strong.
For anyone just joining us, check out last week’s dispatch to learn more about what we’re doing, and get caught up on the month of daily drawings. Join me/us!
And with that, let’s get into week TWO.
WEEK 2: DAILY CREATURES
This week’s theme is Co-Existing Creatures. We talk a lot here about paying attention, and this week we’re thinking about the animal life—both domestic and wild—that surrounds us every day, often without our noticing.
Think about your everyday ecosystems at home, at work, in your neighborhood. What animals do you share space with? Think about daytime and nighttime. Zoom out and zoom in. What sniffs? What flies? What snores? (No, human partners don’t count as animals for this one.) What is visible? What is invisible? What leaves traces but goes unseen?
