I am feeling very nervous about this - I am starting from 0 at the age of 67.

Welcome Maggy, so happy you're here! Echoing Annie and Marilyn , you are not alone. So many people join the GUT with zero drawing experience. The kind of drawing we do here is more about enjoying the process of drawing rather than trying to achieve a certain outcome. There are no rules, and every mistake in an opportunity for unexpected creativity. Welcome to the GUT!

Hi Maggy! I started drawing only four months ago. And like you I am at a lovely age of 64. 💖 It can feel scary for sure, but the GUT community is so kind and encouraging. And you don't have to show your drawings to anyone if you don't want to. I'd encourage you to do it just for the fun and discovery.

Hey Maggy! I am 65! We can do this!!

Me too! I read this post and wanted to start, but I'm a day late and the voice in my head says, "But I can't draw" and the terror of having to share what I can't do? Ugh. Srsly making me want to cry right now. All of which is a sure sign this would be good for me. But it's so scary.

Well this is exciting and when I saw the message in my inbox I felt drawn (no pun intended!) to it immediately! I have a deep love of pencils:) Hello all and I am looking forward to seeing your drawings very much - Alison

Excited to begin! Also created a page in my drawing journal with a bullet journal to track what I really find important and do to kick off the year

I joined Draw Together and GUT earlier this year. It has transformed me. Everyone is so encouraging, supportive, inspiring, fun, and above all, kind. Wendy makes everything doable. Give yourself a gift of drawing together minutes 10 minutes a day and your day will no doubt get better. ❤️

Huzzah! I'm delighted to hear how positive the GUT has been for you and can't wait to see/hear how this 30 days impacts you! So happy you're here, Nancy.

Wow, this really sounds amazing! I haven't really drawn in years - thinking about joining.

You won’t regret it. Wendy usually sends out her ‘dispatches’ emails with the prompts on Sundays.

Longtime follower, first time joiner! I’m excited to try this drawing challenge after failing at a daily journal practice.

For me, the hardest part of trying new things is balancing perfection (or how I want/expect something to turn out) vs what I actually have to “turn in” when I’m done. (When I was a kid I wouldn’t turn in projects if my paper got wrinkled 🥴) I’m hoping the ten minute timer helps me here! The right supplies will also help.

Suggestions on pens, coloring tools, or other things I can buy when I hit the local art store this weekend?

P.S. I gifted a subscription to my mom, too!

A pencil and copy paper will do to start. So will a ballpoint pen and lined paper. Crayons, watercolors, oils, pastels, markers, digital - anything works. I bought a fountain pen and I adore it. Start with something at the art store that catches your eye. We’ll be doing all sorts of things this month and how you do it doesn’t matter. No rules in art, as Wendy says.

I am so excited to re-up by taking on The 30-Day Drawing Habit . I am grateful there is still a day or two in the year that I can purchase a dedicated sketch book. Still, Wendy's post encouraged me to start yesterday without one. I took a Lynda Barry prompt to create monsters from Making Comics. Fun, fun, fun. It's so great to work in and be buoyed by these great teachers who know that creativity begets peace.

I am excited to join this community of kind artists. I feel so good when I draw but I don’t always let myself ‘play’ even though I’m retired. Thank you Wendy for creating this opportunity for adults to play and helping kids make art.😍

“I can’t draw.” “I’m not creative.” “I don’t do art.” Huge challenge on creative side and on daily habit side aaaaaaand I’m going to try. Thank you Wendy!

This will be my second round of the 30 Day Drawing ✍️ challenge and the sense of pride is just amazing. Wendy and GUT make me feel like me and what I create matter and that I too am an artist (not in the sense of traditional art classes where you have to earn the title). The best part is if I bow out for a few sessions I’m always welcomed back with open arms. Whether you post or not, you will not regret your choice 🥰. With bias I do say that the GUT community is among the best out there and have nothing but positivity and grace. 🌈

Cannot wait for this! Drawing/painting/creating 3x a week is on my 2024 goals list!

Oh man, this is what I need. I did a 30-day drawing challenge (Austin Kleon's 30-day Suck Less practice) a little over a year ago and it was fantastic, enlivening. And then things just went to hell all in one week—unreasonable expectation type promotion at work that I couldn't say no to and my husband had a brain cancer recurrence, and my practice went out the window. It was a mostly shitty year, and I feel so far away from my creative and expansive self. But things are stabilizing a bit, and even more than that I'm feeling the need to attend to my soul again beyond just keeping my head above water. Can I do this? I don't know, but I've been reading along with GUT posts all year and I know without a doubt it would be a good thing to try. And I could use some community as well, so... yeah.
