Day 20. Fun Lesson: WEATHER SYSTEMS, Part 2.
Dropping from our heads into our hearts with color
Helllloooo GUTsters.
Today we finish creating our personal Inside Weather Chart, and wrap up a week of Fun Lessons. A quick recap of all we learned before we put a bow on the learnin’.
Fun Lesson recap: a week can teach so much.
We kicked off with a Lynda Barry inspired lesson to help us let go of expectations and get into our bodies We practiced drawing with our eyes closed and our non-dominant hand.
We switched over to drawing on the right side of the brain with an upside down giraffe drawing inspired by Betty Edwards that helped us see what’s actually in front of us instead of what we think is there.
We learned to see negative and positive space, learned how composition works, and created a negative space drawing, inspired by great drawings and paintings.
Inspired by Bill T. Jones, we used our whole bodies as art-making tools and learned to incorporate a full range of movement into our drawing practice.
We learned the basics of light and shadow and how to create depth in our drawings with the help of silly space monsters. :)
Finally, we’re focusing on the emotional component of art making: how to become more aware of our feelings and use them in our art-making.
ALL THAT IN ONE WEEK! So proud of you, GUT. I hope you feel proud of yourselves for trying new things and being brave inside and out. It’s an honor to draw with you every day.
If you missed any lessons (or delights of doodles for that matter), it’s not too late to join in. You can pick up anytime.
Now let’s wrap our up Feelings lesson.
Weather Systems, Part 2.
In case you missed it, here is a link to Weather Systems, part 1.
WOW, y’all. Have you checked out all the Part 1 weather chart drawing in the chat? I’m blown away. This feelings focused lesson surfaced some BIG FEELINGS for everyone:
Many of you said this was the hardest assignment yet. A few of you said it came easy. Everyone said it was intense. There was a wide range of visual expression - from icons to expressiveness to abstract to realistic to comic style. Many of you used inspiration and skills you developed in the past 3 weeks - like doodles and shading and observation. No matter how you approached it, you did it, and you did it with an open heart. Proud of you, GUT.
FYI, I buried the lead. Yesterday I essentially gave you an illustration assignment. Didn’t know you were practicing illustration, did you? You were! I gave you a bunch of information about feelings and art, and then you used your BRAIN to come up with ideas about ways to represent your own feelings, and then did your best put those ideas down on paper. (So different from the doodle drawing process, right?? A very different kind of drawing.) That’s one part of drawing. The ideas part. The head part.
Today we shift to the HEART part. Let’s inject some feeling into those ideas. We do that by paying attention to our bodies and our breath. By making decisions with our GUTS.
Here’s where we left off:
And here’s where we are going.
SPOILER ALERT: I am giving you more than 10 minutes today, GUT. Today is a color-until-you-feel-complete day. Enjoy. :)
Let’s get into it.
